Surge in circulation recorded for Challenge Publications bike titles
Flow winter edition scheduled for early December sale

LOS ANGELES—October 1, 2003— Despite adversity and the growing
complexity of its legal battles with a former employee, Challenge Publications,
Inc. recently saw a surge in magazine circulation. The quarterly Flow
magazine notched a 5 percent wholesale circulation gain as the October
edition of Mountain Biking magazine added 3 percent more.
Challenge Circulation Director John Cappello said, “It was doubly
important to meet the September on-sale schedule because that issue was
widely promoted at a large regional convention of supermarket buyers by
our national distributor (Curtis Circulation Company).”
“That event saw seven new supermarkets and four more drug store
chains added to Flow and Mountain Biking’s nationwide
distribution to “A” class retail outlets. These new outlets
respectively provide Flow and Mountain Biking an immediate
5 percent and 3 percent boost in wholesale circulation. That’s exceptional
in today’s marketplace,” Cappello said.
Challenge President and Publisher Ed Schnepf attributed the success of
the October and November issues of Mountain Biking to a supportive
bicycle industry and a lot of extra effort by new Editor Alan Davis. “Alan
packed a lot of ‘sell’ into those issues on short notice,”
Schnepf said, “but everyone on our staff and our network of freelancers,
plus the industry in general, made a supreme effort to help us produce
one of the best issues of 2003 (October).”
Bike group Managing Editor Charles Pickett said Flow is on schedule
for the December on-sale date. Two issues of Mountain Biking
have already hit the stands since the July defection with a third going
into production next week. Pickett said, “The next edition of Flow
has coast-to-coast coverage of the Red Bull Rampage, the Boston Bike Battle,
an inside look at racing with Bryn Atkinson of the Iron Horse Mad Catz
Team, a ton of new 2004 hardware and softwear, plus a handful of other
potentially fleshy tidbits. We are amassing a blockbuster issue.”
